La Paz, Bolivia

The Amara “witch” plucked a small coca leaf and placed it on top, perpendicular to the man leaf. The second man leaf she’d seen for me.

“You will have a child, too.”

Now, that would take a miracle – or a curse. Literally, since I was missing a uterus.

She’s reading someone else’s leaves, I thought smugly. Until, with horror, it dawned on me that the guy on my man leaf could come with kids.

Before I could recover, she said, “Your parent’s health is malo.”

My heart nearly stopped, as images of clogged arteries and cancer cells parked in my mind. “What do you mean?”

“You know. They are nervous, tense.”

I heaved a sigh of relief.

Of course my divorced parents were nervous and tense. They were vacationing together in Hawaii.
